Oriental Dance commonly referred to as "belly dance" is one of the world's oldest known dance forms. In Egypt it is referred to as "Raks Sharki" literally translated form the Arabic as "Dance of the Orient". In ancient times this dance was used as an aid in assisting childbirth using undulations and body rolls. In Egypt today a bride and groom at their wedding will put their hands on the dancer's stomach to indicate the dancer's relation to ancient fertility cults. It is a dance characterized by smooth, flowing, complex sensual movements of the torso alternating with shaking and shimmy moves. The dance grew out of traditions of Eastern music. Eastern dancers are muscle dances as opposed to Western "step dancing". It is traditionally danced barefoot indicating its connection to mother earth with the knee never lifted higher than the hip. It is a dance uniquely made for the female form with emphasis on abdominal muscles, hip and chest moves.
